Michael Mangold studied sociology and political science at the universities of Heidelberg and Mannheim. Following his studies, he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Applied Economic Research in Tübingen (IAW) from 1993 to 2001 and managed numerous projects. His work focused on tasks in the fields of education, labour market and organisational research.
Following his work as a lecturer at the IAW, he founded and headed the Institute for Media, Education and Business at the ZKM | Centre for Art and Media Karlsruhe and the Karlsruhe University of Education until 2015.
He received his doctorate from the (then) TU Karlsruhe in 2007 with a thesis on theories of economic change and the position of the family. Since 2014, he has been continuously involved in the development of the degree programme in Cultural and Communication Studies at the Turkish-German University (TDU) in Istanbul and developed the Applied Media degree programme for the Salzburg Urstein Institute (SUI).
He is also a partner in Proflog GmbH, which specialises in open data and municipal financial and budget consulting.
In the past, he has worked as a scientific advisor to the IAW and organised joint workshops. He has been an IAW Research Fellow since 1 November 2024.
